ESSEX COUNTY, NJ — Are you a homeowner who wants to make repairs to your house – but needs some funds to make it happen? Essex County’s Home Improvement Program may be able to help.
Through the program, homeowners can get a loan to pay for a range of home improvements, including heating, roofing, plumbing and electrical, as well as “code violation abatement.”
The county’s program is funded through the Community Development Block Grant Program. It provides deferred loans to low and moderate-income homeowners who occupy a one to three-family home.
Applicants will have a lien recorded against their properties. The lien must be paid off only if the homeowner sells or transfers ownership of the home within a 10-year period.
Residents in the following towns are eligible to apply: Belleville, Caldwell, Cedar Grove, Essex Fells, Fairfield, Glen Ridge, Livingston, Maplewood, Millburn, Montclair, North Caldwell, Nutley, Orange, Roseland, South Orange, Verona, West Caldwell and West Orange.
Residents of Bloomfield, East Orange, Irvington and Newark can request home improvement loans through separate programs run in those cities and towns, which apply for funds through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Want to learn more? A home improvement workshop will take place on two dates at the Belleville Senior Center, 125 Franklin Avenue in Belleville:
- Tuesday, April 30 – 6 to 8 p.m.
- Saturday, May 4 – 10 a.m. to noon
